CASE STUDY – SIGNIFICANT UPGRADE TO SLUDGE DRYING PANS
A major treatment plant in Victoria had a requirement to automate 24 inlet valves that filled their sludge drying pans. Each sludge drying pan is similar in size to a standard soccer field and require manual input to open and close the knifegate valves periodically, possibly 2 – 3 times per year.
The shallow drying pans capture the biosolids as a by-product of the sewage treatment process which generally comprise a mix of organic matter and inorganic compounds. The production of biosolids involves sludge thickening, anaerobic digestion, de-watering, stabilisation and on-site storage. Once the process is complete the end product is then sold to potential end users.

A major sewage treatment plant located 30 km west of Melbourne’s central business district, on the Port Phillip Bay coast. The plant produces 40 billion litres of recycled water a year and its substantial wetland is of international importance for its waterfowl since 1983.
Acrodyne were contacted to present an alternative to the manual operation and offered 24 x Limitorque MX-05 electric actuators. Acrodyne’s service technicians visited the site and removed the manual hand wheels, sized up the correct actuator, measured the valve thread and the mounting pattern of the existing pedestal. The new nuts from the actuators were shipped to the valve manuafacturer to obtain optimal fitment.
The actuators were an on/off application and due to Limitorque’s intelligent actuation system it now allows the plant operator to monitor each of the 24 valves and check their positions via the SCADA system, a modern necessity that was previously unavailable with the manually operated valves.
The customer was extremely pleased as the speed of the project from procurement to supply and due to the minimal amount of adaption and ease of fitting the end user’s technicians were able to set up and commission the actuators with the assistance of Acrodyne’s skilled service technician.
